The band derived their name from the Portuguese meaning of grave and their kind of music has rotated around this. This is a Brazilian band, which explains why they opted to have a Portuguese name considering Brazil is a Portuguese speaking country. The band was formed in the year 1984 in the city of Belo Horizonte. They are renowned for their thrash metal, death metal and ultimately groove metal realms as they played this genre of music in the late eighties after their formation and in the early nineties. This was when they were desperately trying to build their own foundation in the rock music industry considering their origin was from a country that was not very renowned in producing successful rock bands. At that time, the focus was in America and the United Kingdom; hence they had to face this tough challenge of proving that they were up to the task regardless of their origin. In order to prove their talent, the band began blending other genres of music like the hardcore punk, nu metal and industrial.
This was an exceptional show of talent as not many other bands could play such a wild genre of music and come up with great tunes. As of today, Sepultura has released twelve studio albums with their latest album titles Kairos being released in 2011. They may not have had all their records topping charts but at least they have had their share amount of success with some records that fans tended to appreciate. Singles like the 1991 release Arise, Chaos AD released in 1993 and Roots which was released in 1996. despite being of Brazilian origin, the band has sold over three million copies in the United States alone while the global market has been more responsive as their sales have hit a little over twenty million copies.
